Betty's Group's story
Betty's group is made up of six hard working women. Betty is 18 years old and lives in the town of Kumi in the Mbale region of Uganda. For the past 3 years, Betty has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells soft drinks, sodas and snacks. To help expand her business, Betty has requested a loan of 150,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more drinks, such as soda, and snacks to sell. This will help Betty to generate greater profits and take care of herself. Betty hopes that in the future she will be able to become a powerful business woman in town. Betty is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
