Las Comerciantes (Cuenca) Group's story
Las Comerciantes Communal Bank is made up of 10 women who work primarily in commerce, which allows them to improve the economic stability of their households. They live in the city of Cuenca, which is surrounded by mountains because of its rugged geography. It's bathed by four rivers, and there are a variety of places to enjoy nature. The cuisine is varied and captivates the palate everyone who visits. Mónica is one of the members of this group. This is her third loan with her friends and colleagues from the group, which she likes because of the unity and companionship among all the members. She's 33 years old and married, and has two children from this relationship. Her first child, 15, attends a school in the city; her second child is barely a year-and-a-half old. Her husband is working abroad in search of a better future. She lives with some relatives because she doesn't have her own house. Mónica makes a living sewing, which she learned on the job because her parents were professionals. Now she has a small tailor shop in her house and she works every day without a fixed schedule. She sells everything she makes in the fairs in the city. As she spends all her time at home, she also raises animals. She's going to invest her loan in buying fabric and thread for her workshop. Her goal is to have her own house. The small photos are of two members who weren't able to be present for the group photo.
