Benkelema 2 Group's story

The members of the Benkelema 2 group are married women who are on average 37 years of age with four children. They all live in polygamous families in Monpiela, a village in the municipality of Niena in Sikasso, the 3rd administrative region of Mali. They work with the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance institution to carry out their agricultural activities during the rainy season. They are on their seventh loan with the institution, and previous loans have been duly repaid. Kadiatou, who is standing in the middle, cultivates groundnuts. She intends to use her loan to buy seeds and fertilizers to maintain 1.5 hectares (3.7 acres). After harvesting, the production is sold in the village, and at the Sikasso market to a clientele composed of men and women. She expects to achieve an average profit of 150,000 FCFA per growing season. The profits will enable her to pay off her loan and also help her husband with daily expenses.
