Tadii Youth Group's story

This group's members come from one village and are aged between 16 and 26. A number of them dropped out of school due to financial challenges and have been living on wages from odd jobs for a long time. After being trained by PENYA, the group identified organic gardening as the business they would like to venture into. They have been doing well over the past year and have been supplying the local business centre with fresh vegetables. Their goal is to further their training in organic farming and enter into a farming contract to supply local hotels. They would also like to venture into oyster mushroom production. PENYA assists borrowers with entrepreneurial skills training through the Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) Program. PENYA also helps them form Village Savings and Loans Associations where they save proceeds from their businesses that will then become the future sources for additional loans and business investments. Finally, PENYA carries out mentoring and monitoring visits to ensure that the businesses are being run viably. Through linkages created with extension workers and some buyers, PENYA borrowers have access to further training in the production and selling of their produce.
