Bernice's Group's story
Bernice's group consists of some married women and one widow. These women are, on average, 48 years old and have children. They all live in extended traditional families in the neighborhood of Teshie, in the greater Accra region. The members of the group know one another through family, neighborhood and friendship ties. They sell doughnuts, 'gari' (made from cassava tubers, it is similar to potato flour), rubber bowls, sachet water, jeans and cassava dough. They are on their fifth group loan with ID-Ghana. Bernice is a 39-year-old jeans seller. She is planning to buy two bales of used clothing from wholesalers in Accra. She will resell her merchandise to a retail customer base consisting of both men and women. She is expecting to make an average monthly profit of GHC 100, which will be used to meet the needs of her family. A part of her profits will also be reinvested in her business. They need a total of GHC 3,600 to be able to expand their businesses.
