La Gloria Group's story

This eight-member group is called "La Gloria" and is based in a community surrounded by sugar cane fields. Nearby there there is also a very pretty river which is visited by people various different areas. Rosa is one member of "La Gloria". For thirty years she has made a living producing typical sweet products from the region (such as "cocadas", coconut sweets, "jamoncillos", fudge, and "dulce de leche"). Rosa tells us that in the beginning the work was difficult as she did not know how to make the sweets. However, a single mother, she wanted to work in order that she and her son could prosper so she asked her sister to teach her how to make the sweets. Rosa learned very quickly and, little by little, she gained good customers. Rosa goes out to sell in nearby communities and tells us she is very happy with her work as it is a family tradition. The first person in her family to start making sweets was her grandmother and the skills have now been passed on to two generations. A Vision Fund loan will help Rosa to buy coconuts, sugar, sesame seeds, milk and colouring for making her sweets. Rosa also makes a few sales of clothes in order to have an extra income. She hopes that, with her profits, she will be able to do some renovations to her home and any leftover money she will save for a rainy day. The other members of the group: Teodora - sells clothes Rolando - sells drinks Zuleima - sells footwear Ana Luisa - sells make-up Irma - sells food Angelica - sells sweets Odalis - sells clothes.
