Violeta María's story

Every 15 days the communal bank "La Inmaculada" meets in Tosagua. The city is known as a very dynamic location where most of the inhabitants are involved in agriculture and live-stock farming because of the lush vegetation. Violeta, 51, became a widow some time ago. She has four children: three adults and a 17-year-old daughter still in school. Three of them live at home. In order to provide for her family and get ahead, Violeta is a merchant and sells spices and seasonings. She also sells bedspreads, bags and clothing, among other things. She has a small stall where she sells once a week, since the rest of the week she goes to markets in other cities. She buys her merchandise in Santo Domingo. For several years she has been selling sheets and bags but three years ago she began selling dressings. She started her business with loans from Fundacion Espoir and she is very grateful because of the good profits. This loan is to buy seasonings, bags, sheets and clothing. She is a founding member of her communal bank. She likes the help she receives from the group. Her goal is for her daughter to become a professional.
