A loan helped to buy certified coffee plants and seeds.

Carlota's story

43-year-old Carlota is a determined housewife, entrepreneur and farmer. She is married and has four adult children who no longer live under her roof. Carlota was unable to attend school owing to a lack of financial support from her parents who had little money. Carlota learned how to grow coffee at a very young age from her parents, who have spent their whole lives farming. Together with her husband, Carlota has been in this business for more than 20 years. Her coffee crops are located 3 kilometers from her home and she travels there every day on foot. However, the land on which she grows the crops does not belong to her so she must share the profits she makes with the land owner. The maintenance and technical support required by the crops is the responsibility of her family and Carlota works together with her children who help her to cut, prune, spread manure and fertilize. The produce is then sold in the local market. It is bought by local consumers. However, some is also sold to third parties who re-sell it. Carlota currently needs help so that she can buy certified plants and seeds to grow. In this way, she will be able to improve her crops and increase the number of plants that she grows. She will make more income from this new harvest and will be able to continue growing. Her goal is to acquire new plants and seeds so that she can improve her crops. Her dream is to buy a plot of land so that she can own her own fields. She hopes they will be the best in the area and will make her enough income so that, over time, she will have her own capital and be able to keep all her profits.
