A loan helped to purchase stock for a clean energy business.

Franklin's story

Franklin lives in Port-a-Piment, Haiti, an area with erratic access to electricity. He has a degree in accounting and he works as a taxi driver of motorcycle. One of the reasons he wants to sell cookstoves is because he doesn’t like seeing people cut down trees to produce charcoal. EarthSpark efficient cookstoves can help minimize the effects of charcoal on the environment by reducing carbon emissions and deforestation. He has started to sell clean energy products with EarthSpark. He used this “business in a bag” to launch a clean energy entrepreneurship with EarthSpark. He sold out of his products so quickly that he has paid off his loan and is now coming back to us for another loan. This time, he would like to double his business and is asking for 730 USD. With this money, he will continue to sell solar desk lamps and efficient stoves. With his first Kiva loan, Franklin was set up with a “Business in a Bag”, a kit containing a personalized mix of small-scale clean energy products, marketing materials and training on energy literacy, SMS tracking of sales, and basic business skills.
