Simeona's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!
A loan helped buy fertilizer, manure and other agricultural supplies, and hire labourers.
Simeona is a native of the community of San Antonio located on the outskirts of Estelí. She is married and has an adult son aged 33 who has left home and lives in another area. Simeona began growing coffee ten years ago at the age of 53. She and her husband got together a sum of money from selling corn and beans and decided to plant a manzana (approximately 1.7 acres) with coffee. As the years passed they increased the area and today they have four manzanas under cultivation. Simeona gets help from her husband and from the bank MiCredito. She sells the coffee at a distribution centre located in the area where she lives; the coffee is then exported. She also earns money from selling beans and corn. She would like to sell direct to buyers in Europe as without an intermediary she would earn more money. Simeona hopes to expand further the coffee plantation and replace the old plants with new ones. She hopes that the price of coffee will improve in the 2013-14 cycle. The loan that Simeona is seeking will be used to buy fertilizer, manure and other agricultural supplies, as well as hire labourers to help look after the four manzanas of coffee. The money will help her grow the business, increase sales, and expand the area under cultivation. Her future plans include buying more land. Her goals are to have a better harvest in the next cycle and replace old diseased plants with new ones.
