Jumwa's Group's story
Jumwa is a forty-two-year-old mother of seven and businesswoman. To earn income for her family, she sells coconut wine, trades charcoal, bakes and sells 'mandazi' (a local doughnut), and works on other people's farms for payment. Her businesses face various challenges including customers defaulting on payments, lack of market for the wine, labor-intensive production of charcoal, and drought-limiting farming activity. Jumwa is joining the KOMAZA microforestry program so that she can invest in her children's education with the profits from the tree farm. She also wants to build a house for her family with her proceeds.
