Safietou's Group's story
This group was formed during the first cycle of the local village loan fund, and comprises women who come from the same area and are all merchants in the fish selling sector. They are united by good social and professional relations. Maguatte is the featured borrower; she is 49 years old, married, and has six children, three of whom are boys. She is standing all the way on the left in the photo, dressed in a large dyed boubou with her hand raised. Maguatte has run a business selling fresh and smoked fish for almost ten years, and has gained good experience in this field. Her new loan of 70,000 FCFA will allow her to buy baskets of fresh fish, which she is going to sell at retail at the fishing dock in her area. The profits earned will allow her to take care of the nutritional, educational, and health needs of her children and strengthen her savings in the local village loan fund.
