Primero De Enero (Cuenca) Group's story

"Primero de Enero" (1st January) is a communal bank which is made up of 9 female members and 1 male member who all live in the same community. They are all friends from the Valle parish in Cuenca, a place that is surrounded by beautiful landscapes thanks to its hilly geography. The centre of the parish contains a mixture of old and new architecture. The Valle parish is doing well as there has been a big commercial surge with people dedicating themselves to agriculture and business. The people there are kind and friendly and still keep the old flames of their culture and traditions alive. One of the members is María Nube who lives in the Castilla Cruz area which belongs to the Valle parish. This is her first loan with the "Primero de Enero" communal bank which she was invited to join by a friend. María Nube is 43 years old and married with 2 children. The daughter is married and lives independently and her son is single and he works and supports them financially. Her husband works in a private company. The house that they live in is the fruit of their work together. María has been selling clothes door to door to her friends and acquaintances for 2 years. She works from Mondays to Fridays with no fixed hours. She will invest the new loan in buying clothes to continue building the business. Her aim is to finish her house as there are still a few things that it needs.
