Granito De Arroz Group's story
Angelina is 50 years old and is from a picturesque area where the majority of the people are engaged in making crafts from wood or stone. The region has abundant pine and cedar trees. Very close to this community is the national Monarch butterfly sanctuary of Mexico, where every year these butterflies arrive from Canada. They put on a beautiful show, and thousands of tourists come to visit the sanctuary. Angelina is part of a group called "Granito de Arroz". She makes crafts from ocote leaves that fall from the trees. Beautiful crafts are made from these, such as purses, baskets, napkin rings, fruit bowls, tortilla holders, trinket boxes and many other items. She also makes decorative rugs, tablecloths, pillows and other crafts that she takes to sell at the butterfly sanctuary, since she can obtain good prices there. She reports that when it is not the butterfly season, a cousin helps her sell her crafts in Mexico City. She is seeking a loan in order to buy thread in different colors, yarn, cloth, needles, rings and many other items. She is grateful for this loan opportunity as this will help her obtain the materials to make her crafts and bring income to her household. The other fifteen members of the group are named Martina, María Guadalupe, Lourdes, Eduwiges, Rosa, Alicia, Isabel, Marisol, Laura, Rocío, Leticia, Arcelia, María de Jesús, Guadalupe and Mayra. They will use the funds to purchase shoes and clothes from catalogs, groceries, fruits and vegetables, Mexican snacks, and other goods.
