A loan helped to buy citrus fruits.
Balimaya Group's story
The five members of the Balimaya group are married women with an average age of 39, and have an average of three children. The majority of them live in monogamous families in Hamdallaye, a popular neighborhood in the city of Sikasso, the third-largest administrative region in Mali. They are on their third loan with the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance institution, and aim to satisfy their customers' requests. Wassa works selling citrus fruits, and is pictured standing in the middle of the rest of the Balimaya group members. She plans to buy 15 baskets of oranges with her loan, which she will resell on a cash basis on site and from home, to a clientele mainly comprised of women. She hopes to make an average monthly profit of 26,500 francs CFA, part of which will be used to repay her loan and the rest will be saved. Wassa plans to increase her sales so that she can better satisfy her customers.
