Benkan Group's story
The four group members are married women living for the most part in extended traditional families. They average 43 years of age and six children each. They all live in the district of Lafiabougou in the city of San, region of Segou (4th administrative region of Mali). They know one another as neighbors and colleagues, and through ties of kinship. They buy and sell clothing, vegetables, and fish, and they provide restaurant services. They joined the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to meet the needs of a growing and demanding customer base, and are now seeking their 11th group loan. The past ten loans were correctly repaid. Mrs. Maïmouna is the group’s president. She is the one standing second from the left with a scarf on her head). She is an expert at selling rich bazin fabric (a type of damask) and wax pagnes (colorful west-African cloth). She is in high demand in the neighborhood and at the big market.
