Arco Iris (Cuenca) Group's story
The communal bank “Arco Iris” [Rainbow] is made up of 11 women members and one man, who live in the community of 3 Marías in the parish of Turi in Cuenca. This area is known as the city’s overlook, as from there one can admire a large part of the city of Cuenca. Its people are very hardworking and earn a living through raising animals, agriculture and commercial activities. The women members are dedicated to both their homes and their jobs that give them the opportunity to maintain their economic independence. With their sacrifice they provide for their families. They are warm-hearted, kind and gentle women who continue to maintain the culture and traditions of their ancestors. One of the members of this group is Perla, who is 31 years of age, married, and has two children aged 12 and 8. Her husband is a teacher, and they own their own home. Perla sells sandals and costume jewelry, which she sells only on the days of the outdoor market, spending the rest of her time with her children. This is Perla’s second loan through this communal bank, as previously she was a member of another group. She is going to use the loan to buy sandals and costume jewelry in order to increase her products. Her goal is to continue growing her business.
