María Angelita's story
María is a member of the "Mujeres con Visión" communal bank. She lives in the Quinta Chica area of Cuenca, a city with a cold climate, and thanks to its architectural beauty, a World Heritage Site since December 1999. Its people are friendly, kind, and still maintain the culture and traditions of their people. María is 28 years old, and the single mother of a nine-year-old son who attends a local preschool. She does not have her own home, so she lives in her parents' home, and shares the household expenses. Her father works in construction and her mother does the household chores. Maria has a small business buying and selling plaster crafts. She has been doing this work for four years, and sells her merchandise by going around the city. She works from Monday to Friday without fixed hours. This is the first loan she has undertaken with the communal bank, and she is going to use it to buy crafts in order to have more variety. Her goal is to have her own workshop for making her crafts.
