Seran's Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!
A loan helped to renew her work area and improve her work conditions.
Seran's Group's story
Seran is 23 years old. She is an young Iraqi woman, married, and a mother of two children. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Seran is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family. Searn has 3 years of experience with the small home based business activity which she is constantly working on improving. In the past she took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq to buy a new sewing machine, an iron and some raw materials. Having successfully repaid the loan, she now took a loan to renew her work area and improve her work conditions. Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group. Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers. All members of this group are under 30, and qualify for a 'youth loan'.
