El Progreso 1 Group's story

Francisca lives near El Seybo, Dominican Republic, in a rural community. She is one of the borrowers from the group named El Progreso (The Progress) 1. She has five children who live with her and their father in a batey located in the north of EL Seybo ("bateyes" are small rural communities built by sugar companies for their field workers). Despite her difficulties, Francisca makes the most of her opportunities and she operates a little grocery store where she sells rice, beans, sugar, eggs, canned food and many other similar items. She operates her business during the day from her small business located next to her house. Francisca is requesting a loan to purchase items to increase her inventory. She has had five previous loans and she has been able to bring changes to her family’s life, such as providing school supplies, shoes, clothing, and tending to other needs.
