Luís Ángel's story
Sr. Luis is 46 years old and lives with his wife and three children (a 3 year-old girl and two boys, one 16 years-old and the other 9 years-old). Only the boys currently attend school in the community. Luis is an honorable person. He is a leader in his community and belongs to La Asociación de Desarrollo Comunal (ADESCO) (The Community Development Association) and to a national association of governing boards for potable water. Luis is a mason, a job he learned at the age of 20 as a result of working as an assistant mason with a friend, who gave him confidence so that he developed in that field. He also farms 7,000 square meters (approx. 1.7 acres) of corn, 17,500 square meters (approx. 4.3 acres) of cassava and has been cultivating these crops for more than ten years; he also grows vegetables, specifically 1,500 NATALY Chile plants and 1,500 table tomato plants. He has been growing these crops for the past five years and states that he began farming because he did not have construction work due to the fall in the sector because of the rise in the price of materials. In August, 2012, he acquired a corn shelling machine, one that is manually operated, and rents it to his neighbors and friends, who are farmers, at $20 a day and collects $1.00 from them for every 200 pounds they shell. Luis’ wife is responsible for administering their business renting plastic chairs and tables and table cloths (she has 360 chairs, 40 tables and 65 table cloths). He purchases his agricultural supplies in the city, which is approximately 12 kilometers (approx. 7.5 miles) away. He transports them in his pick up truck and he pays cash for the seeds and plants. The loan will be invested in buying more chairs, tables and table cloths, which will be rented to people and institutions that have events and get-togethers in the community and surrounding areas. They feel there is a high demand as they frequently rent chairs in other places to meet the demand, generating business for the competition. They hope this investment will improve their family income. Luis’ objective is for his business and customers to grow. He expects to generate sufficient income to enable him to educate his children so they can succeed as professionals and help others in the community.
