Gema Monserrate's story

The San Gregorio Community Bank meets twice a month in the beautiful town of Portoviejo, capital of Manabí province. It’s also called la Ciudad del Valle and is known for its warm climate, beautiful women, and a wide variety of wonderful food. 23-year old Sra. Gema lives there. She is single and lives with her parents. She’s had four loans with the Bank, and likes the system because of the opportunity it provides to help her and her family get ahead. Some time ago Gema took beauty courses at a local college. She is very hardworking and is taking on this loan to help both herself and her father. She runs a nail salon out of her home and wants to use part of the loan for this business, and part to help her father with his business selling natural juices from a kiosk in the town bus terminal. He’s had this business for more than 20 years and the income from it still supports the family. Meanwhile Gema works both from her home or in her customers’ homes when they call her. She’s been doing this for three years and loves her job. The loan is to be used to buy cosmetics and various tools she needs for her salon. The money will also buy fruit for her father’s business. Gema’s dream is to own a large beauty salon which she hopes to equip over time.
