Eugenio Espejo (Cuenca) Group's story
The “Eugenio Espejo” communal bank has 13 members, all women who thanks to their friendship have formed this communal bank. They work in different activities that allow them to improve their home economy. They are hardworking women who despite life’s adversities are always quick with a smile. They live in different parts of the city of Cuenca. This city has a cold climate and is the country’s third most important. Since December, 1999, it’s been a Cultural Heritage of Humanity and it has several places in which to enjoy nature. One of the bank members is Dolores. She was invited to join the Eugenio Espejo communal bank by a girlfriend and this is her first loan. She lives in the Miraflores sector of the city of Cuenca. She’s 58-years-old, married and has four children. Three of them are married and live independently and her single daughter works and helps her out economically. Her husband is abroad since he emigrated in search of better opportunities to move his family forward. She owns the house she lives in. To help her husband with household expenses, Dolores works Monday through Saturday in a small restaurant she has. She’s been in business five years and has a select clientele. She will use the loan to buy table settings and ingredients to prepare her dishes. Her goal is to grow more in business.
