Joyas Del Pacifico Group's story
This communal bank is called Joyas del Pacífico and is made up of 18 entrepreneurs who work in different areas, including salad sales, clothing sales, general store, tailoring, bookstore, department store, beauty product sales, kiosk, empanada sales, services, and other things. All of them are in the city of Valparaíso. María Eliana, the education delegate of the communal bank group, is seated in the first row in the photo in the second place from the right. She's wearing a black jacket and a skirt with white, lilac, and green trim. Her hair is dark and she wears it loose. She's holding her granddaughter in her arms. She works selling toiletries and also does tailoring (making pants) and weaving. She has worked selling toiletries for a year and more than six years tailoring and weaving. She says she works Monday through Saturday and reserves Sunday for going to church with her grandchildren. She works from home and sometimes offers her products door-to-door. She organizes her work schedule according to her availability. She buys the merchandise she needs from liquidators that sell toiletry products. She buys the wool and fabric at low prices from distributors in the city of Valparaíso; also, they already know her so they give her a discount when she's making her purchase. With the loan she will buy toiletries, wool in various colors, fabric, and thread. One of María Eliana's goals is to have a tailor shop in her home to generate more income and choose a better quality of life. María Eliana lives with her three grandchildren, ages 7, 4, and 1. Her dreams for her family are to give her grandchildren a good income and a good future for their studies. She is very happy about and grateful for the opportunity offered by Fondo Esperanza because it will allow her to invest in her business. She comments that the trainings have been fundamental for her business and also her personal development because she has learned how to organize and better distribute her income and investments. With regard to the communal bank group to which she belongs, she says it's excellent with very good communication. Valparaíso is located 120 kilometers northwest of Santiago. It's the regional capital and also the seat of the country's legislative branch and the most important port. It offers a wide variety of pretty and picturesque places, such as the house of the poet Pablo Neruda, winner of the Nobel Prize.
