Caritas Alegres (Cuenca) Group's story
The “Caritas Alegres” (Cheerful Little Faces) communal bank has 10 members most of which are coworkers. They work daily in a market in the city and some of them also work in various activities. They are kind, nice women who still preserve the culture and traditions of their peoples. They live in different parts of Cuenca, a city known as the Athens of Ecuador and which has been a Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 1999. The charisma of its people, its scenery and its cuisine which is quite varied and the warm-heartedness of its people make this city very special. One of the group members is Gladys, 29. She’s married and has had five children who are 13, 11, 8, 5 and 2 years of age. Her oldest daughter is attending secondary school in the city and the next three children attend a little local elementary school. Her husband works as a private employee. She does not have a house of her own. She shares her in-laws’ house sharing all household expenses with them. Gladys takes care of her home but also contributes to household economy. For the last two months she’s been working in carpentry because she likes this activity; she works Monday through Saturday. She’s also worked for the last nine years providing snacks, soft-drinks, water and others for social events. This is this fourth loan in her communal bank and she will use it to buy sweets and school supplies for her children. Her dream is to own her a carpentry shop since she’s quite knowledgeable in this art.
