Jardines De Paute {Paute} Group's story

The “Jardines de Paute” (Paute Gardens) communal bank is composed of 7 women who live in various parts of Paute Canton, a canton located in the northeast of Azuay Province 42 kilometers from the city of Cuenca. The residents of Paute are among the most hardworking and enterprising in Azuay province; they have known how to face challenges and adapt to change. They have tasty cuisine and one of the attractions is the typical dishes. Flower production makes this canton a veritable garden. They are grown for export; roses of the highest quality and a great variety of flowers arrive in the United States, Europe and Japan. One of the group members is Rocío Victoria, 33. She’s married and has two children who are 13 and 7 years old. Her first daughter is attending secondary school and her son attends the little local elementary school. Her husband works as a day laborer at a flower plantation. She does not have a house of her own; she lives in her brother’s house. Aside from caring for her children, Rocío Victoria works at home knitting and embroidering. She learned this activity from her mother when she was still very young. Today, she works at home from Monday through Saturday with no fixed schedule; she also works in agriculture and she sells what she harvests. This is the second loan she’s taken in the communal bank and she will use it to buy fabric, thread and seeds to continue with her work. Her goal is to have a house of her own.
