Primero De Enero (Cuenca) Group's story

The communal bank Primero de Enero is comprised of seven women and one man who live in the Valle Parish which is located five kilometers from the city of Cuenca. Its people work in agriculture, livestock farming and commerce, and many work throughout the city in different business activities in order to improve the economic situation of their households. Our members are hard-working, warm-hearted entrpreneurs, whose greatest virtue is that they still maintain the culture and traditions of their villages. One of the members of the group is María Eulalia, 21 and single, who lives with her parents. Her father is a bricklayer and her mother works as a domestic employee. The house they live in is their own. María Eulalia raises and sells chickens and guinea pigs. She also works at her grandmother's store, where she has been working for a few years. This is her second loan through the communal bank and she plans to use it to stock her grandmother's store so there will be more variety. Her goal is to finish her university education, as she was studying Business Administration but due to economic reasons was unable to continue.
