Las Orquideas (Cuenca) Group's story

The community bank, “Las Orquídeas” (The Orchids) is made up of six women and two men who all live in a beautiful sector of the city of Cuenca. The city is known for it cold climate and its natural and colonial beauty, as it has been a UN World Heritage Site since December of 1999. There are four principal rivers that flow through the city, and they give the name Santa Ana of the four rivers to the area. The people of Cuenca still practice and maintain the cultural traditions of their ancestors. The members of the community bank are all hardworking, kindhearted people who dedicate themselves to providing for their families. One of the group members is Zoila Teresa, who is 65 years old, and is married with seven grown children, who are also married and live with their spouses and families. Her husband is a bus driver, and they live in a rented home. Zoila Teresa spends most of her time taking care of the household chores, and she also raises chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs and sells them from her home. She has had this business for ten years. She is requesting her second loan with the community bank in order to invest in purchasing chickens. Her goal is to buy more animals to keep growing her business
