Mary's Group's story
Mary's group is comprised of 3 hard-working women. Mary is 21 years old, single, and has two children, one of whom attends school. She lives in the town of Bulenga in the Kampala west region of Uganda. For the past year, Mary has been working hard to manage her small business, which sells pigs. To help expand her business, Mary is requesting a loan for 400,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda, which she will use to buy more pigs and feeds. This loan help Mary to generate greater profits and pay school fees for her son. In the future, she hopes to be able to own a retail shop. Mary is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life-skills training. The ELA program has increased Mary's future prospects by helping her to improve her lifestyle.
