Fe De Los Porteños Group's story

This communal bank is called “Fe de los Porteños” and it has 18 entrepreneurs who are in a variety of lines of work among which we find general merchandise sales, mobile phone accessories sales, herb and crafts sales, among others. All are from the city of Valparaíso. Silvia is a member of this communal bank. In the photo she’s in the last row second from left to right. Her hair is gathered and she’s smiling. She sells cosmetics via catalogue and also knitted items that she herself crochets (the art of creating woven items by pulling one or several threads with a hook-shaped needle). She’s been doing both these activities for 25 years. She sells door to door and comments that she has a well-established clientele so her schedules are more flexible because she knows her customers’ schedules. She buys her supplies in specialized yarn stores and she buys the cosmetics directly from the catalogue suppliers. She will use the loan to buy yarn, thread and perfume. One of her business goals is to continue growing. Silvia lives with her husband and one of her dreams on the personal level is to travel with her husband to the south of the country. She is very happy and grateful for the opportunity provided by Fondo Esperanza because the loan will help her invest in her business to renew her merchandise and to do her knitting. She also feels motivated with the group and the training provided at communal bank meetings because she’s learned from them. Valparaíso is located 120 kilometers northeast of Santiago. It’s the regional capital and also the seat of the country’s legislative branch of government. It’s the nation’s main port and it has a variety of beautiful and picturesque places like the house of the poet, Pablo Neruda, Nobel Prize winner.
