A loan helped to buy hogs.

Bilma Raquel's story

Bilma is a member of the La Merced communal bank. She lives in the Santa Ana parish, located in the southeast of Cuenca. The climate is cold and one can see most of the city from its central park. Its residents raise livestock, farm, and many work in the city. Bilma is 30 years old, is married, and has three children, ages 12, 10, and 1. Her two oldest attend school. Her husband is a driver and provides public transportation services. They don’t have a home of their own, but live in their parents’ home and share in the household expenses. Bilma has been selling hogs for the past six months and also teaches in a literacy program for youngsters and adults. She works half days Monday through Friday and all day on the weekends. She’s been a member of the communal bank for 10 years and will invest her new loan into hogs so that she can continue her business. Her goal is to have a home of her own.
