Union Costaneras Group's story
The communal bank “Unión Costaneras" [Union of Coastal Women] will begin their ninth loan cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Andes regional office. The group consists of eight members and they have a board of directors headed by Luisa. The businesses the communal bank members run are varied and they include: the sale and weaving of cotton blankets, the sale of candy, soups and other products, the making of polleras [the skirts worn buy indigenous women in the Andes], the knitting of awayos [shawls], cleaning services and the sale of food. Luisa has been a member of a communal bank for four years. Currently she has a food sales business. She learned the business from her mother and has worked on it for years. The loan from this cycle will be used to increase her capital with the purchase of food provisions. She will buy the provisions from the markets in the city of La Paz and later sell the products in her food stall. This type of work allows her to support her family since she is married and has three children. When Luisa is asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she responds that she enjoys the area of health.
