María Domitila's story
María is a member of the Mira communal bank. She lives in Zhidmad parish in Cuenca, which is noted for its natural beauty. The people there raise animals and work in agriculture and much of the population, especially the young people, work in different businesses in the city. María is 62, married and in a common-law-marriage that has produced 8 children. All are adults, married, and seven of them live on their own. One of her daughters lives in her house and shares the household expenses. María's husband is a farmer and they own their own house. María has bought and sold "quesillo" fresh cheese for the past 5 years and she sells it only on market days. She raises cows, pigs and sheep and also farms but what she produces is only for the family. Her daughter-in-law invited her to join the bank, and this is her first loan with them. She will use the money to buy chickens and fertilizer to improve the fields.
