Johanna Elizabeth's story
The “Virgen Del Mar” communal bank meets every two weeks in the beautiful resort of San Mateo in the city of Manta known for its beautiful beaches that are visited year-round by local and foreign tourists alike. Most of the residents in this area fish and do chores related to the sea. We met Johana, 30, here. She’s married and has three children who are 9, 7 and 2 years old. The older ones attend school. Her husband’s a driver. To earn a little on her own to help her husband with household expenses she sell all types of clothing door to door. Also, her husband brings fishing supplies to sell to merchants in the area or directly to local fishermen. Both she and her husband work every day selling the fishing supplies and selling clothes. She sells on credit and collects on weekends. She’s been in this line of work for three years and does very well. She will use this loan to buy more merchandise like: pants, blouses, t-shirts and fishing supplies. She’s been in the communal bank two years and likes it because she entertains herself in the group and also sells her products. Her dream is to have a car to do her sales.
