Married with three children, Mrs. Fatoumata is 36 years old and lives with her husband and their children in the town of Koutiala (in the Sikasso region). For social reasons, she was not given the opportunity to continue primary school. She quickly became interested in income-generating activities she learned at her mother's side from early childhood. After conducting several unsuccessful activities, she finally got involved in selling fruit and vegetables some 10 years ago. Fatoumata finds that this activity provides her with sufficient income, since fruit and vegetables are needed by all to stay healthy. To satisfy her numerous customers and expand her business, she decided to approach of the Soro Yiriwaso micro-finance institution seven years ago. After 13 solidarity loans (group loans) all correctly reimbursed, this is her second individual loan, the first having been repaid in full. With this loan she intends to purchase various fruit and vegetables from Sikasso and from villages surrounding Koutiala. She sells retail at the general market in Koutiala to a base of women and men customers, for cash or credit. She expects an average monthly profit of 100,000 FCFA she plans to use for Soro interest payments, participation in daily family expenses, and invest the remainder in other income-generating activities. She relies on funding from Soro Yiriwaso for the expansion of her business.
