A loan helped to purchase more medicine for her shop.

Mary's story

Mary is 51 years old and lives in the town of Njeru in the Jinja region of Uganda. She has lost her husband and is now supporting six children, one of whom is currently attending school. For seven years, Mary has been working very hard to build up her small pharmacy, which sells various medicine and supplements to local customers. To help expand her business, Mary has requested a loan of 2,500,000 Uganda Shillings from BRAC Uganda. She will use the loan money to purchase more medicine for her shop, and wants to use her extra profits to renovate her house. In the future, Mary hopes to change her drug shop into a larger dispensary. Mary is a member of BRAC's Small Enterprise Program (SEP). The program primarily serves small entrepreneurs like Mary who do not have enough collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown too large for microloans.
