Padre Rolando Escobar Group's story
This community bank is called 'Padre Rolando Escobar' and it is made up of 17 entrepreneurial women who work in different business activities, mainly commerce. They all live in the city of Linares. María is a member of this community bank. She is in the back row of the photograph and has red hair. She has been working in commerce for 10 years. She sells groceries, drinks, meat, toiletries, dairy products and sweet treats in a grocery store that she has on her property. María buys her merchandise every week and her suppliers sell her products directly in her home. She works from Monday to Sunday, from 8.00am to 11.00pm. She will use this loan to buy merchandise with which to stock her business. María's goals for her business are mainly to expand the physical space in which it is located. She says that her business is doing very well and so she needs to buy merchandise in larger quantities. María lives together with her husband and her two daughters who are 13 and 8 years old. She says that her older daughter helps her in the business when she has free time but most of the time she is studying. María is very happy and grateful for the support that Fondo Esperanza have given her as it has enabled her to invest in her business. She also enjoys the meetings and likes the group that she belongs to. Linares is an important urban center which is located in Maule region, in the central area of the country. Farming and wine growing are important businesses in this area. They are very big exports. Cereal growing (rice, wheat, corn and oats) is very important, as is vegetable growing (beets, cabbage, lettuce and chard), and fruit growing. Linares is Chile's main rice-growing province. In fact, 78% of the national rice production comes from this province, especially from Parral district.
