María Elena's story

In the city of Portoviejo, capital of Manabí, known for many years as the City of the Royal Tamarinds, the members of the Alfa communal bank meet every two weeks. We met María, 26, here. She’s single and still lives with her parents. For her, this is the third cycle in the communal bank and she likes it because the loans are easy to get and because her fellow members meet their responsibilities. To earn her own resources and be able to contribute to covering household expenses she started a business in partnership with her father three years ago. They sell footwear. They have a small stand in downtown Portoviejo. They work Monday through Saturday from 8am until 6pm. There are days when she works alone and others with help from her father because sometimes he has to go to other cities to buy merchandise. Her father has been in this business for 30 years and she started to invest in it just three years go and they are doing very well because they have a good clientele. She will use this loan to buy all types and styles of footwear. Her dream is to have her own store all by herself.
