Nueva Gabriela Group's story
The Nueva Gabriela communal bank is made up of 17 business owners who engage in various lines of work, though principally in retail, including in clothing sales, food stands, pastries, and the preparation of doughs and salads. They all live in La Cisterna, a community located in the south central part of the Santiago metro region. It's a residential and commercial community, though in its early days it was a rural area of large tracts. Nonetheless, with the growth of the population and emergence of greater services, it has become a 100% urban area. Jimena, a member of this communal bank group seated in the front row wearing glasses, prepares and sells fast foods, such as fried masa, pizzas, pan amasado (Chilean biscuits), sopapillas, french fries, hot dogs, and barbecued meats. She's been doing this for three years and says that she has been very good with her business, maintaining a good base of customers. She sells her food items from the patio of her house and buys her merchandise from a distributor in the La Vega market to sell on the weekends. With this loan, she will buy merchandise to supply her business with items including propane, potatoes, tomatoes, avocados, meats, and hot dogs. Her goals are to better establish her business in her home so that her customers can eat at the counter. Currently, she has an industrial oven and refrigerator. Nonetheless, she is lacking a few pieces of furniture and construction materials for her setup. Jimena lives with her two children of 15 and 18, both of whom are in school. Her inspiration for keeping up her business is to support her son's studies in aeronautics. In brief, her dreams are to go on providing for her children's studies so that they can become professionals. Jimena is very happy and thankful for the loans and services provided by Fondo Esperanza [Kiva field partner] to her business. Also, she enjoys the communal bank and group meetings, as they are also neighbors and share a great trust between them. For her these meetings are an opportunity to relax and have some fun.
