A loan helped to buy potatoes.

Korotoumou's story

Korotoumou was born in around 1969 in the Niangasso prefecture of Sikasso. She is married and has 2 children - one boy and one girl. She lives with her husband in Hamdallaye, a neighborhood in the town of Sikasso (third administrative region of the Republic of Mali). For twenty years, Korotoumou has been involved in sales of root vegetables, in particular, potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams. She sells at the Médine market where she is very much in demand because of the quality of her produce. To meet the demands of her growing number of customers, she decided to join micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso about a year ago. She is on her first loan which will allow her to increase her trading capital so she can buy 8 sacks of potatoes. She buys her produce locally from people who have come in from the surrounding villages, and re-sells at the fruit and vegetable market in Médine to customers who are mostly itinerant merchants from all over. With this loan, she expects to make a monthly profit of 170,000 CFA francs which will be used mostly to increase her trading capital, to pay her expenses, to contribute to the family's expenses and to pay the interest on her loan.
