La Ponderosa (Cuenca) Group's story
The “La Ponderosa” communal bank is made up of eight women and three men, all good friends who know each other well. They each work daily in their own different businesses which allow each of them to help their families financially. Our members live in Cuenca, a city that was named to be one of the fathers of human culture in 1999. It has a beautiful architecture, natural surroundings, and culture. Its people are very friendly and maintain their culture and traditions. María Margarita is one of the group’s members. She is 42 years old, a widow, and lives in the Monay sector. She has two children, ages 17 and 21, both of who are married and on their own. She lives in a rented home. María Margarita raises livestock and has been doing this for a long time. She uses the milk to make cottage cheese which she sells in Cuenca. This will be her second loan through the communal bank and she will invest the money in a plot of land. Someday she would like to have a home of her own.
