Los Picarones Del Portal Group's story

The “Los Picarones del Portal” communal bank is made up of 20 entrepreneurs from the city of Temuco. Their principal businesses are crafts in general, jewelry crafts, decoupage, and products for the house, decoration, and gifts. Romina, is a member of the group, and she is the one kneeling in the middle of the photo, wearing a black coat and a black purse. Her business consists of selling items for personal use, in her store, which is located in a shopping center. She has been in this business for 7 years. Before that she sold products in the street, since she comes from a family of merchants. Her work day is from 9:00AM to 8:00PM. With the loan she will buy merchandise for her business, specifically gloves, leggings, warm hats, and cosmetics, among other things. Her goals are to arrange her business esthetically, so that it will be more attractive to customers. She would like to put in glass display cases because right now one can’t appreciate very well the merchandise in the store. Also, she is currently awaiting a project that will include the installation of electricity, and therefore light, in each store in the shopping center. Romina lives with her 2 year-old son. Her dream is to have her own house, since she is currently living in her grandmother’s house. In order to make this happen, she is saving money so she can apply for a housing subsidy. For Romina, the loan from Fondo Esperanza has been a great support for her business, since with it she will be able to invest in the business. She is very happy with the meetings and with the other members of the group, because they are very close. Temuco is the capital of the region of Araucanía. The city is located 670 kilometers to the south of Santiago (the capital of Chile). Nearby there are several lake resorts (Pucón, Villarrica) and very interesting native flora and fauna concentrated in nearby nature parks. It is worthy of mention that this region is where 50% of the country’s Machupe (indigenous group) community members live.
