Benkadi 1 Group's story

The ten members of Benkadi 1 Group ("Harmony") are married women who, on average, are 43 years old and have four children. Most of them live in polygamous families. They live in Zerlaba, one of the villages in the municipality of Pimperna in the prefecture of Sikasso (third administrative region of the Republic of Mali). They work with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to finance their agricultural business during the winter season. This is their seventh loan with the institution, the previous loans having been repaid on schedule. They grow tomatoes and jakatous (a vegetable that resembles a small green tomato but is actually a member of the eggplant family). Gnire, who grows jakatous, is pictured standing at the left. She intends to use her loan to pay for plowing and buy supplies and seeds to cultivate one hectare of farmland. The harvest will be sold in her village and at the market in Sikasso a clientele made up of men and women. Gnire expects to make an average profit of 145,500 CFA francs per season, which she will use to repay her loan and help her husband to cover daily household expenses. She wants to keep alive her cooperation with Soro Yiriwaso to best farm her land and earn more income from her activity.
