María's story

María is a member of the “El Progreso” community bank in the community of Independencia, in the city of Santiago. She is a street vendor, specifically of variety store items. She sells brushes, combs, personal hygiene items, toys, and cooking items. María sets up her stall in a market on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. She buys her merchandise at a distributor where they sell diverse products at a low cost, and it is convenient for her business. She has done this for 7 years. She started selling music CDs, DVDs and PlayStation games. With the loan, she will buy merchandise, specifically combs and hair brushes and an awning for her market stall and a delivery tricycle to transport her merchandise. Her goals are to prosper in her business, supply it with merchandise and buy a vehicle. María lives with her husband and their two children, aged 14 and 11 years old. Her dreams are to offer her children a better quality education. Also, to have a house with patio access, since at this time she lives in an apartment and she wants to have more comfort in her old age. María is very happy and grateful for the loan offered by the Fondo Esperanza, since it has been used to invest in her business. She feels very comfortable in the meetings, since she is entertained and knows the other members. Independencia is one of 34 communities in the city of Santiago (capital of Chile), located in the north-central sector. It began in the beginning of the XIX century as a traditional sector of the city. It's main street is Av. Independencia, where the old Inca Trail passed through, the northern entrance to the city of Santiago. Given its large indigenous population, the Indigenous Cultural Center of Chile is found in Independencia. It also has important historical buildings, among them historical monuments of Chile.
