Arcelia Natividad's story
In the parish of Crucita in the canton of Portoviejo, we find a place known as Los Arenales. Here the village bank Miraflores meets every 15 days. This place is known for its beautiful beaches, its food and for the warmth of the people. Arcelia is a founding member of the village bank and she likes everything about the bank - the loans, the benefits, the presentations and above all the unity of the group. She is 52 years old, married and has 7 children who are now grown, one of whom still lives with her. Her husband is a farmer. She is a housewife who is taking out this loan so that her husband can use it for agriculture. They plant rice, vegetables and certain fruits with short growing cycles. They work Monday to Friday from 7:00am to 3:00pm. She tells us that on occasion they contract other people to help them when it's time to plant or harvest. When the harvest is ready they sell it to merchants that come to their house to buy their products. Her dream is to have good health so that she can continue on without being dependent on anyone.
