Gualaceñitas (Cuenca) Group's story
The Gualaceñitas Communal Bank is comprised of 16 women who are engaged in different business activities. This allows them to contribute financially to their households and to give their families a better quality of life. They live in the Gualaceo canton. This canton is known for its delicious food, beautiful scenery, craftsmanship like footwear made with skillful hands, and the warmth of its people. Miriam M. lives in the center of the Gualaceo canton. She has her second loan with her communal bank, which her cousin invited her to join. She is 30 years old; married; and has four children, ages 12, 11, 8, and 6. Her first daughter is in high school, and the other three attend school in the canton. Her husband has migrated in search of a better job in order to give his family a better future. They do not have their own house, so they live with her parents and share expenses. Miriam works in her mother’s shop, where she operates machinery to make footwear. She does not have a fixed schedule, so she is able to spend more time with her children. She has been selling Yanbal brand cosmetics for six months. She will use the money from the loan to buy perfumes, creams, costume jewelry, and cosmetics. Her goal is to grow much more in her business.
