Abou's story

Mr. Abou S. is a 32-year-old married man and father of one child. He lives with his wife and their child in the district of Massablacoura, city of Bougouni, in Sikasso (third administrative region of the Republic of Mali). He quit school at an early age to pursue commercial activities such as the purchase and sale of grain. He learned this business from one of his cousins. With eight years of experience, Mr. Abou S. has a good command of his activity and is in high demand. In order to obtain the capital necessary to satisfy his customer base, he joined the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance institution. This is his first loan with the MFI, and he plans to buy four tons of grain. He stocks up in Bougouni and surrounding villages, and sells his merchandise at retail to the locals, at the Bougouni market, for cash or credit. With this loan, he expects to make a monthly profit of 60,000 FCFA, which he will use to expand his business.
