Genny's story

Genny V. D. Benítez is married and has 3 kids who range in age from 26 to 34 years old. In 1997 she took an interest helping people improve their personal and professional appearance. As a result, she began to teach herself and to practice what she learned from various beauty salons located in Cartagena, Columbia, where she gradually gained a customer base. In 1985, the year she married her husband, she opened a beauty salon in her home. Her experience and dedication to her work lead to an increased customer base. Today her business is very well known in her neighborhood. Her husband is a taxi driver and his income varies. Genny’s business, that she started with the help of her husband, has aided greatly in sustaining their home and in reaching their common goals, such as their children’s education. Currently, Genny is saving in order to acquire their own home, for which she and her husband have been budgeting for a long time. This will be her eighth Kiva loan through Funcación Mario Santo Domingo. The previous loans served as start-up capital for her small business. She was able to get it ready and buy the necessary equipment. She plans to use the loan to buy hair care products, in bulk, in order to save money. She will sell the products to her clients, who, when asking her advice, become potential buyers. Looking forward, Genny hopes to make her salons more comfortable. With that, she hopes to open a salon on one siD. of her home, which she plans to buy. Towards this end, she and her husband are directing all of their effort.
