Family (Cuenca) Group's story

The communal bank named Family is made up of 15 defiant, happy, hardworking women who carry out various business activities that permit them to financially support their households. They live in various locations in the city of Cuenca. This city is the third most important of the country and it was named a World Heritage site on December 1999. Carmelina S. lives in the city of Cuenca. She is on her second loan cycle with her communal bank, to which she was invited to join by her sister. She is 42 years old, divorced, and she has 3 children, aged 22, 20, and 11 years old. The two eldest are married and live independently. Her youngest daughter is in school. She doesn't have a house of her own so she rents their home. Carmelina sells Yanbal brand cosmetics and she has had her business for 2 years. She sells her products traveling throughout the city, working from Monday to Saturday. The funds from her new loan will be used to invest in the purchase of more Yanbal brand cosmetics. Her dream is to see her daughter complete her studies. Icela Maria M. lives in the downtown area of Cuenca. She is 25 years old, married common-law, and she has 2 children, aged 5 and 3 years old. Her eldest is in kindergarten. Her husband works as a construction worker in the area. They don't have a house of their own, so they rent their home. She sells Avon brand cosmetics and she has had her business for the past year. She sells her products traveling throughout the city. She doesn't have a set schedule but she works from Sunday to Sunday. This is the first loan she accesses through her communal bank and it was her neighbor who motivated her to join the group. The funds from the loan will be invested in the purchase of more Avon brand products. Her goal is to have a house of her own.
