Mireya Adriana's story

The Communal Bank “Estrella De Belén” (Star of Bethlehem) meets every fifteen days in the neighborhood of Santa Marianita in the city of Manta. This place is known for its beautiful beaches that are visited year round by foreign and domestic tourists. Most of the residents engage in fishing or other jobs related to the sea.

This is where one can find Sra. Mireya. She is 21 years old and has been in a common law relationship for six months. At the moment, she does not have any children but is expecting her first child very shortly. Her husband works as a fisherman.

Mireya has a business selling fishing equipment such as nets, hooks, lanyards, and other items required to conduct fishing on the high seas. She works three days per week and offers her merchandise to the fishermen when they arrive at the port. Every fifteen days, Mireya travels to central Manta to buy what she needs so that she will have everything when her customers arrive. She says that she has been in this business for two years and has done very well.

The loan will be used to buy nets, ropes, hooks, cable clips, and other items. She has been with the Communal Bank for four loan cycles and enjoys the fact that her fellow members have been orderly. Her dreams include finishing her studies and continuing to move forward.
